It is considered the first crime story in German literature – and was formative for many later authors of horror novels from Edgar Allan Poe to Stephen King. The book tells the terrifying story of a mysterious series of murders in Paris at the time of Louis XIV and their spectacular clarification. Only in these first lines does he show his literary mastery of creating images and building tension with a minimum of words.
